🧹 The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying up our Servers

Every so often, it's helpful to do some tidying so that our servers (computers that run in the cloud) can once again spark joy.

  • Updated our Office 365 app credentials. Microsoft at some point migrated their OAuth infrastructure, and unfortunately this means we were stuck using undocumented legacy credentials. We've upgraded as a precaution. Some users may need to re-connect to Office365 due to this change. You'll get an email alert if this is necessary.

  • Migrated our servers from Ubuntu to Debian. Debian is generally considered more minimal and stable than Ubuntu. It also should be a bit more secure, since it runs fewer services (aka Apps) by default. Bonus feature: we're using about 10% less memory across all our servers.

  • Moved our image backup server to a different datacenter in Toronto. Our main server is located in San Francisco.

  • Made sure our automated backups (we use Tarsnap) work correctly on the new server. Also improved our backup restore scripts (in the unlikely event we'll need them).

  • Fixed inconsistencies in our API endpoints. Our endpoints now all use dashes for spaces instead of underscores.
